Stephen Fitts5.0 out of 5 starsGrid Down Reality Bites Tears into You Like A Great White Shark!

Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI had read one of the Grid Down books previously and loved it, but this one takes the cake. It follows three different groups of people as they try to cope with a nationwide collapse due to an EMP. The section of Preston, Amy, and Sharon working things out in the apartment had my family laughing until we cried. I kept thinking that any man with a woman like Amy would be the luckiest man in the world, then looked across the living room and realized she was sitting right there. The emphasis on trapping and snaring in this book is well thought out and from what I, an unitiated, can tell was written by someone who truly knows his stuff. I’ve definitely got to add an Emergency Snare Kit to my list of things to get. Course I need to learn how to use it as well. On pages 62-63 the reader will find a pretty good list of equipment for a Bug Out Bag, of course it will need to be tailored to the readers’ skill set and geographic location, but of all the lists I’ve seen online, this one is the best.

The stories are fast paced and as the book jumps from group to group, it does so fairly flawlessly. The reader will find himself reading and 4 hours later realize just how quickly time has flown. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in EMP aftereffects, survival, trapping/snaring, or just plain wanting a good book about the day the world ended!  Robert L. Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis is my first time reading a fictional “end of the world” book and found this to be a very gripping, entertaining and educational tale. Ever wonder what would happen to all the dogs if people were unable to feed themselves. Released into the wild it is likely that they would turn wild (feral) and resort to instinctual needs to band together in packs like their relatives the wolves. And then there are all of the wolves to contend with as well. Maybe everyone that believes repopulation of the wolf population should be carefully managed so that the honorable intent of restoring natural wildlife does not supercede the needs of the people that populate this planet as well as other animals that are exposed to being attacked.  The situation presented in this book also describes the reactions of people, prepared, unprepared and oblivious, to the removal of a stable economic situation and the dependency of the world on electricity and devices that utilize electricity. This book will make you think about how prepared you are for even a 1-day to 1-week emergency, let alone an “end of the world” scenario. What would you do? How would you behave? Would you survive? (small caveat: editing could have been stronger, there are some grammatical and spelling errors throughout the book but probably not so obvious to everyone but a hyper-vigilant person like me sees them like flashing neon signs, only mildly distracting and they don’t disturb the flow of the book)

Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseIf you read the previous reviews, you’ll find many positive ratings, and for good reason. This is a great read, well written, and hard to put down. I think the authors have a pretty good grasp of what might happen if such an event did occur. If you have any doubts, imagine how you feel after not eating for 3 or 4 days, then multiply it by millions over, and it’s not hard to imagine some of the very ugly scenes from this book playing out in real life.

The authors also do a great job of weaving in some tips of how to survive such a situation, as well as emphasizing the need of people coming together as a community to survive the natural instinct of human predators to band together to prey on the weak. Their choice of “bad guys”, the fake eco-religion, is a good one in as that movement is made up of a lot of well meaning folks who’ve been hoodwinked by a few money/power hungry snake oil salesmen who use the human devotion to a higher source to achieve their selfish goals. It could have been any religion: Muslim, Christianity, etc, but rather than rehash this story line, I appreciated the fresh look at a growing, and too often overlooked fringe group of radicals based on unproven principles.

Realizing this is fiction, there is a lot of things that go right for the characters, but the authors do send a few dark clouds their way, and I think that in this situation, those who could have a story like this happen to them, would have to have a lot of lucky breaks just to wake up in the morning.

Anyway, this is a good read, and is plenty long. It doesn’t leave you feeling like it’s just a few chapters of a serial novel, but does leave plenty of room for more. Two thumbs up!Joe Bratcher5.0 out of 5 starsGood Read

Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI’ve read a lot of the survivalist genre fiction and most of it is just awful. This was surprising; it is very well written and informative. Not the usual survivalist fair.

Possibly could have used a professional editor, but still head and shoulders above most of this genre. The characters kept referring to an “EMP bomb” which is not the correct nomenclature, but that’s easy to overlook. There are a few grammar hiccups here and there, too. Anyway, you’re reading for fun and knowledge, not grammar. The dialogue flows well and doesn’t seem stilted or like it’s being directed a certain way. Although it seemed like, at times, that the title should have been Serendipity Rules (not reality bites), there are some main characters that you shouldn’t get to attached to, they meet a grisly denouement.

They don’t spend a lot of time on anti-government clap trap, this is generally about survival. You aren’t being politically challenged and antagonized for 400 pages. You will pick up some tips and techniques. I know I’m not nearly as prepared as these guys were.

I would like to have read more on the general public’s reaction to the situation; the author’s pursued a narrative that follows the characters, their trials and triumphs, closely. I think this makes for a better novel, we are, after all, reading about survival, not geopolitics. If you are unfamiliar with the EMP effect, you might want to read up on it concurrently with this novel.

On the whole, an excellent read.
